I think this has been asked before but I couldn't find it.

The volume knobs on my SG rotate very smoothly and lightly and occasionally whilst playing enthusiastically i notice I've knocked them from 10 to lower by mistake when I need it at 10.

Is there a simple technique to make them a bit stiffer to rotate?

I'm afraid your knob becoming a little less stiff is something that happens to most of us as we get older, mate.

Cut a piece of sponge with a hole in the middle to fit  underneath them. So remove knob. Cut a doughnut piece of sponge (grey sponge you get in packing is great) slightly smaller than knob diameter.Pierce the centre and replace knob on top. I've done this to the volume knob of my Stratocaster. Works a treat:)

I've used neoprene washers in a similar way. Whatever you use be wary of adverse reaction with nitro paint finishes. Poly finishes should be OK.

  • Similar to the above but I use a small rubber washer on my Strat, but it makes the vol really stiff.

O ring or even a small rubber band twisted round your 'shaft' will add a bit of friction.

  • A friend of mine had the same problem with his Japanese Squier Strat. We tried applying some Kilopoise hard grease to the base of the pot shaft (matron!) and it did the trick.

    I said maybe.....
