So a band asked me to buy a couple of photos of them that I took.

Shot a wedding and in the evening there was a live band, very good I’d say and the lead guitarist asked to buy a few photos of them in it.

i am happy to sell it to them, there are no one else in the photo but the band so model release is not a problem. I have the copyright as per my contract with the couple.

anyway, how much in your experience if you ever bought them expect to pay?

As a supporter of musicians I’d love to say “free!” But as a business and need to pay bills, I ought to charge something.

If you got paid for the wedding and the guy just wants a couple of jpegs by email, I'd ask him to put a few quid in a charity box.

What is the commercially accepted norm for a single shot with the rights for reproduction? £30/40? Two for £60-70?

Depends upon the use to which your images might be put.

Might be worth coming to a written licensing agreement in which there is a tiny nominal charge for your services as a photographer but full copyright control and a fee for every time that your work is re-published under web site circumstances.

A better arrangement might be to negotiate a fresh photoshoot session with the band. Up to you whether to ask for a once and for all fee or some sort of repeat usage payment.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

My mate was in a successful wedding band and there’s a lot of mutual back scratching in that industry. If they are a wedding specialist band you might be able to get in bed with them as it were.

I’d give them the images free and make sure they use them on all their social media sites and credit you with a link back to your website.

If they recommend you to their clients in the long term it will be worth more than the few quid you’ll pick up from selling the images.

Watermark them though, I genuinely can't remember who took some of our photos.
I absolutely know I credited them the first time I shared them, but they've been copied and pasted by countless venues for gig publicity and with the best will in the world I've lost track.

    That's a businesslike opinion
