    Great call.

What's interesting is that the original by The Nerves has a slightly different progression at the end, and doesn't sound remotely as good...

  • Many Led Zep songs. The two that spring to mind immediately are Babe I’m Gonna Leave You and the Rain Song.

Me neither, it sounds like a typical "Blondie" song

A bit taken back that Hotel California hasn't been mentioned yet, or Layla by Eric Clapton.  Apparently, or so I've heard, radio stations get many complaints if these two songs are cut short on air - not that I imagine many radio stations in the UK would play them anymore.

I assumed that it was ‘endings’ rather than ‘playout solos’. Otherwise Hotel California, Comfortably Numb, Tunnel Of Love, Layla etc would be contenders.

Layla was actually mentioned in the second post, by one of those strange people who just don’t get it ;).

  • Nothing Else Matters by Metallica.

As a kid I used to listen to the black album on headphones every night for about 2 years, I’d be falling asleep by the time NEM came on, and there was an art to sliding up the volume control on my Walkman to hear the fade out then dropping it to zero before Of Wolf And Man came on.

Ah, in that case maybe I misunderstood the intent of the post.

Mean Streets by Van Halen. When I had it on vnyil I used to crank the volume up and up as the track fades out and cut it just before the next track starts and repeat it again and again.

Dunno why I like it so much, not a lot happens, but Eddie's rhythm playing just sounds so good.

"Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" by The Smiths.

Some beautiful lead work there, and an unexpected bluesy 7th chord at the very end.

James Burton also played on that album but I've no idea who actually played on that track (could have been Rodney Crowell or even Brian Ahern, the producer and Harris's then husband).
