Why though, do seemingly intelligent people use apostrophes in plurals? I wish it didn't bother me, but it does. You see it a lot in this board too.

Sometimes a simple plural like CDs starts to look weird without one.
There's a large, factory-made cardboard point-of-sale sign in our local Tesco advertising "mascara's", which is obviously clumsy and wrong, but the practice is so prevalent these days that I probably don't even notice most of them any more.
