I occasionally have to stop myself doing this, just because ignorance HAS won. 
Sometimes a simple plural like CDs starts to look weird without one. 

There's a large, factory-made cardboard point-of-sale sign in our local Tesco advertising "mascara's", which is obviously clumsy and wrong, but the practice is so prevalent these days that I probably don't even notice most of them any more.

The revised, paperback edition of the Lynne Truss book, "Eats, Shoots And Leaves", mentioned punctuation guerrillas, patrolling at night, correcting shop signs by adding or removing rogue apostrophes. Are they still active?

Those of us who only post via our phones, but whose near field eye sight is not the required potency to spot errors, may contribute to this

I broke up up with apostrophes, I found them too possessive.

The trouble is smart phones, or more precisely the predictive text and poor eyesight. Sometimes punctuation is inserted automatically,  at times even a different word than which was intended. Often when quickly typing I don't check the text and then find it's not what I meant to type. OK laziness on my part to not proof read what I have written but you can make a mistake and the software (spelling and grammar thingy) saves it as correct.
Not excusing myself or others but the screen on a PC is easier to spot mistakes.

I can put up with a million misused apostrophes before accepting something like "should of" or "would of". God that annoys the shit out of me.
