Audacity issue

Used to use Audacity to record my show then add in an extra track if needed when editing. 
For some reason I cant do it as it keeps coming up with error code 9999 unanticipated host error
anyone know about Audacity?

Have you recently changed host computer or operating system?

Had to reboot PC back to factory settings

In that case, as per steamabacus' post, you may need to go into Settings and reset Audacity to work with your sound card.

Still struggling with how to do that. 
Got a really distorted sound now.

Like a very, very short delay? Are you recording something playing from the computer/web? If so, you will need to go to Edit > Preferences> Recording and then uncheck 'Software playthrough of input' otherwise you get an infinite feedback loop of playback>recorder>playback>recorder>.... ad infinitum.
