  • The new Sylosis album is really growing on me. Josh Middleton is an incredible metal rhythm guitarist, such speed, accuracy, not to mention riff and song writing, and vocals. A homage to and modernisation of old school thrash influences, epic anthemic melodic sections, searing solos, breakdowns..... seriously good album.

  • My journey into darkness continues. I’ve always listened to a bit, but recently Metal has completely taken over my listening habits. Is this a bit odd at 43?  Modern death metal especially, in particular:

    Mortiferum
    Coffin Rot
    Ossarium
    Cognitive
    Witch Vomit
Venom Prison ( incredible female vocals)
    Temple of Void (magnificent)
    Glacial Tomb
    Micawber

Now need to listen to the classics... started with Obituary

  • If you want to listen to the classics may I reccomend the following obvious choices -

    Death - Scream Bloody Gore
    Obituary - Slowly We Rot
    Deicide S/t
    Autopsy - Mental Funeral
    Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
    Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
    Entombed - Left Hand Path
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, or Blessed are the Sick
    Atheist - Piece of Time
Morgoth - The Eternal Fall ep
Dismember - Like an ever flowing Stream
    Massacre - From Beyond

I've recently re-discovered "The Moth Gatherer."
Excellent post-metal stoner with electronic edges and sludge shoegaze overtones.

    Start with Pale Explosions.

    @MagicPigDetective ;
A couple of thigs I'd add to that list.

Repulsion - Horrified. Releasd in 1989 but actually a demo from 1986. This is absolutely key to pretty much all extreme metal.
Hellhammer - Demons Entrails pretty much covers all their material. Short lived and pre-Celtic Frost. PRimitive teen angst and still killer 36 years later
Master - Unreleased 1985 Album. Not released until about 15 years ago, as the name implies,  but heavily traded and influenced loads.
Devastation - Creation Of My Ripping Death demo. A seminal moment. LG Petrov from Entombed did an actually double take when he saw my Devastation shirt at Hellfest one year. A fave of Napalm Death, Entombed, Dark Throne and Mike Ammott.
Sindrome - Into The Halls Of Extermination. Featured Troy Dixler from Devastation and also Sean Glass. later of Broken Hope and Soil. It's a demo but supposedly one of the best selling death metal releases of of the 80s. They reckon they sold 30,000 or so

I am enjoying this thread and am starting to look through some of the bands mentioned. I have liked metal but never really explored it too much. I am going to take the recommendations and make a Word document and just gradually work my way through if people are cool with that?

So Spotify is going to be just metal then!

With a user name like that, I'd suggest the album Doomsday For The Deceiver by Flotsam and Jetsam. Jason Newsted's band before he joined Metallica.

  • Really like the The Moth Gatherer's stuff, thanks @Octatonic   ;

And @reverend ; , I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the really early stuff, but some of that is outstanding, Hellhammer in particular ! I can detect the influences of US hardcore punk, Black Flag etc combining with thrash etc.

@jetsam1  ; be our guest...… and let us know how you get on.

I collated all the recommendations just in this thread so far and there is a lot! Months worth........

My Metal past has largely been Opeth and bits and pieces of Black Sabbath and that sort of thing and Nu Metal rally has never done too much for me. Trying out Swallow the Sun at the moment. Good so far.

Trying out WInterfellyth as well. Song about Mam Tor.

  • Thought I'd resurrect this after finding a couple of gems.

My latest discovery is Hooded Menace from Finland, the new album, The Tritonus Bell, is incredible Doom/Death with some 80's metal/thrash elements thrown in. It's brutal and the production and musicianship are outstanding.

Also, the Doom front, new album by a Philadelphia band, Heavy Temple, doomy/sabbathy with psychedelic elements, love the lead guitars on this, lots of wah, reverb/delay etc

    What else is about?

Nice to see this thread back, I haven't heard anything new for ages.  Heavy Temple sound like they could be my kind of thing.

Back to this thread indeed. What is it that makes this style of music so satisfying to listen to?

@beed84 Giving Caligula's Horse a listen. So far I do like.
