My bass amp has a full range DI output with valve compression and drive.  I take that into either an SE 500 series or directly into my motu 24i.  I use a UA Pultec or Massive Passive for more tone shaping if I need.  My other favourite is to use my Ampeg B-15N with an AKG D-112 into a Valve mic pre and compressor.  This tends to sit well in the mix without too much tweaking

Thanks for the input everyone. Really interesting to see the variety of approaches. I will dabble around and consider the stuff mentioned.

All my bass comes from Eurobass 2 VST, which has a clean and distorted pre-set, I usually do clean mono for the Low, and distorted stereo for the high, then do the eq split thing, The biggest challenge for me is getting it to sit in a mix that transfers to the various ways people consume music, I dont bother to try and cater for Beats stuff, so mostly I try and get it to sit low mids.
