What am I doing wrong? Recording into a daw.

What's Hot
Last year my good lady bought me an AI so i could record some of my noodlings and at the time i used Audacity. I had no problem but the recorded track was very quiet and i had to adjust the settings post production to boost them to usable, this i soon tired of and the AI is now collecting dust. I recently picked up a Katana head and had a go using the AI function on that last night into Band Lab and I get exactly the same result, records an incredibly weak signal. Must be something i'm doing because every Youtube vid make's it look so easy!

  • Have you tried Reaper? , sounds like your levels are too low.

One person's 'incredibly weak signal' is another man's 'sensible amount of headroom'. Don't expect a raw recorded signal to be anything like as loud as a mixed track.

  • A digital signal is usually - 18 dB which is quiet. It's then boosted as part of the work flow. Virtually all of the time additional volume is added to the whole track during the mastering stage at the end.
