Great player and an even more underrated singer. Seen him numerous times since the early 90's, Last time was at the Jazz Cafe in London. He's consistently damn good.
Once went to see him supporting Clapton, I had second row seats cos a friend of a friend worked for EC, Cray came on really early and those first few rows at a Clapton gig are full of his decrepit die-hards who use the support act as a time to stand about and socialise much to my annoyance. So I got up and stood at the barrier, Cray nodded and seemed to appreciate that someone was paying attention, at the end of his set he crouched forward, handed me his pick and thanked me for coming. Nice guy. You'll have a great gig.

Hmmm. I might go to the St Albans gig.

I’ve only got two albums of his though, Strong Persuader is the only one I know well.  But, do like his playing.

A truly brilliant singer - as in he could be Sam Cooke. I actually prefer his signing to his guitar playing - though obviously he’s a great player too.

I last saw him about 6 years ago - he’s pure class.

That is my take on him as well - And I don't mean that in the way that his playing is poor - Just that he is a good singer and could have probably made a career as a singer as well if required

Don't actually have a lot of RC material so will need to brush up a bit

    Agree.

His guitar playing is fantastic but it never outshines the song.

Absolutely echo what others have said. Went to see him play guitar, had no idea just quite how sensational his voice is. Saw him a couple of years back and it was great.

Saw him a few years back. Great singer, really really tight band, and tasteful guitar work. I’ve got the Nothin’ But Love and In My Soul albums which are both excellent.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Who’s been talking continues to be on my top ten blues albums. Unfortunately, I didn’t take to any of his stuff before or after. But a great player and singer.

  • My favourite bluesman - thanks for this. Love his voice, funky R&B approach and Strat..

I'll be there in St Albans if anyone's going...
