full sized keys, or mini ones OK? Need aftertouch or not? need control other than "notes" (such as rotaries for filter sweeps etc or pads to trigger those samples)?

Also - define "too expensive". That means different things to different people.

These are both new prices - but at £140/£180 you could get them in budget used (if you can find one) if you cant stretch to new.

I've had a lot of controllers, from 25 key all the way to 88. My favourite is the Native Instruments A61. Superb, and great value. It's a good form factor too, nicely put together, and the keybed is good.
I've also got a M Audio Keystation 88 which isn't bad. Build is a bit flimsy.
A certain Mr @Dodge has forced his mint Roland A500 Pro on me and with being the laziest midi guy in the world it was easy for him.
For what I need it for I'm sure it'll more than suffice.
