Decent tech needed

What's Hot

Can anyone recommend a tech who is actually thorough, conscientious and competent within a sensible distance of York - 100 miles or so -  and might, just might, listen to what I'm saying and act accordingly, rather than doing what they think is best.

But that’s the sign of a good tech!!!!!

It is not the sign of a good tech not to listen to their customer and to do things which have not been discussed.  Or to fit the wrong gauge of strings.  Or to fit an odd string.  Or to fiddle with pickup heights and fuck up the whole sound of the guitar.  Or to fill up holes which may be needed again.  Or to do everything on the cheap.

I'm not even particularly fussy and am easily impressed and pleased so pissing me right off takes rather a lot.

I am seriously considering putting my LP Special in the post to Feline who are, so far, the only people I trust.

A surgeon no, a guitar tech, more than likely.

That's what I'm thinking.  I bought a Strat that he had set up - a Highway 1 - and it was the nicest Strat setup ever.  And I still sold it :(

That can be true of some techs, yes. Although I would also expect a good one to discuss anything daft that the customer wanted and explain why it wasn't a good idea, so I understand poopot's comment too.

Much as I'm always extremely impressed with Jonathan's work and I would highly recommend him, I would never courier a guitar if you don't need to - especially not a Gibson. It's just asking for it to get broken.

Go and see @SteveRobinson in Sale (Manchester). He built a wonderful Tele for me and set up my Godin Radiator for slide (new nut, neck and bridge setup).

And another one for @SteveRobinson - he transformed my 1955 ES130 from a bit of a pig to a thing of joy last week.

Why pay a tech to fit strings? It’s really easy!!!! prolly a YouTube video out there showing you how to do it.

I replaced one of mine mid song during a gig once!
