For the next couple of days I've seen official ebay discount codes linked to guitars, amps and fx being sold by private individuals. How can that possibly work, because sellers will want the price agreed?!? Anyone know about this?

The seller gets the full price, eBay foots the bill for the 10% off

PRODUCT5 has been available for a few days but only on certain items and I can’t for the life of me suss out what the criteria are for why it applies to some items and not others, it’s very frustrating.

But why is EBay doing this?

    It’s basically a PR expense.

The vast majority of small stuff they recoup a 10% fee on - generally the equivalent of the discount (save for the very occasional time they do a 20% offer). The discount is capped so their hit isn’t too bad on bigger-ticket stuff.

They take a loss on stuff listed for a £1 FVF, but sellers shifting stuff successfully is good news for them - people see ebay as a successful selling platform and are more inclined to list more stuff in the future. They need turnover to exist even for the little guys as there is lots of competition out there for them now...

I'd stopped selling on eBay before they brought in £1 fvf. Sounds bad but I can't be bothered listing on reverb any more, just more admin. I wait for £1 fvf now, and list on here obviously. Facebook when things get desperate

The same reason they give you £1 selling fees, the maths is about the same
