Online band rehearsal

What's Hot
Anyone got any experience with setting up a virtual band rehearsal?

Can't meet up due to covid 19 so thinking of other ways. Assume latency on zoom is ok for one on one lessons but not good enough for a jam.

Probably got no chance at the moment...broadband is already under pressure for the amount of use right now, you could try Hangouts or Zoom

Yeah, latency is going to be too high to make music live. It's the sort of thing you could use for discussing & planning arrangements, and agreeing who is doing what parts in vocal harmonies, if not actually making music together.

  • I was thinking along the same lines as the O.P.  I’m going to really miss having rehearsals each week.

Have you tried JamKazam? Latency seems ok within the UK or near continent. Anything further afield is useless.
Be nice to set up a FB jam.

A mate of mine tried a 4-way session on Thirsday using Zoom and said it was unusable - too much latency, sounded like everyone was using a delay pedal.

The website is but you need their low latency interface at $299 to rehearse with low latency  ... scroll down on this page

I'm using my Focusrite Scarlett with no issues. Latency is ok as long as I stick to UK based groups. I've even managed to jam with a drummer from Switzerland with no issues.  USA is a not starter.

Ok, I'll give it a go but I'm assuming your ethernet connected because even the wifi latency would generally be too high for most people

Oh yes, definitely hard wired connection. Wifi a non starter. You might as well give it a go for free. I don't reckon their interface is any better than a Focusrite or similar.

We have satellite correspondent-like latency in some of our real rehearsals, not much point in adding to it!

Is jamkazam free form, or do you have 2 people playing against a synchronised backing track? I cant see how it would work personally my raw ping to google.co.uk is 25ms. Add 5ms for my interface. So assuming that its not peer to peer and goes via a central server that going to be around 60ms of perceived latency by the time the sound from someone else reaches you.

That seem pretty unusable to me. Thats like a 32nd note at 120bpm.

On a technical level it has been done, you need a very wide pipe.
University of West London did a multimedia WAN converged data project a while ago, using Dante AOIP tech.

In practice forget it, unless you want to spend 100k+.

Anyone with any updates on this? Any success stories? I’m guessing that in real world terms it’s still a no go.
