Possible direct monitoring problem (Scarlett 2i2)

Hi, I have a Scarlett 2i2 and when I plug my Kemper into it it works as expected. In or out of my DAW if I want to hear the signal straight through I switch 'Direct Monitor' on and the monitor volume knob adjusts the level sent to my monitors. I have a problem however when trying to record my guitar amp. Using exactly the same kit, only unplugging the XLR from the Kemper and plugging it into the XLR out of my Harley Benton PA-100 attenuator, I have a bizarre issue; even with the 'Direct Monitor' switch off my guitar comes through the monitors, and the Monitor level knob does nothing, it comes through full blast. This happens even if I don't have my DAW open - it's as if the monitor section of the interface doesn't work and my XLR is plugged directly into the speaker. But it doesn't happen with the Kemper using the same inputs on the interface. Any idea what might cause this?
