Interesting that a Squier Affinity wasn't much cheaper in actual £ in 2002 (and obviously more expensive when inflation is factored in) than today. I know that these guitars are the very essence of a globalised product (with production constantly shifting to cheaper locations) but it does illustrate how, at the bottom end of the range, guitars have become increasingly good value.

None of those prices look unusually cheap to me but I suppose I’ve always bought used! If that ad was in this months guitarist mag I still wouldn’t buy any of it!

This is around the time I started playing and I used to dream of being able to afford a Gibson Les Paul. Now I've got 2 and don't even play them. Bit depressing really.

Remember to adjust for inflation before comparing the prices.

I think a lot of people, particularly older people, judge prices against a base level in their head from years ago and they don't take in to account inflation (don't mean guitars, just every day prices).
True that. I’ve got an early 70s Rose Morris catalogue that lists a Gibson LP at nearly £400. To put that in context, at that time petrol was about 25p a gallon, beer in the student union was 10p a pint and I bought my first car, an 8 year old Ford,  for £90. £400 was a simply enormous amount of money.

2002 does seem relatively recent to me . The past  seems more like pre 92

Surprised the Peter Cook was as late as 85 - But 35 years is a long time to recall all prices/models - I was basing my guess more on the Deluxe Reverb amps etc

That is just remarkable especially the Jazzmaster 1965 + 63 + 61 and the 67 TSB + CAR Jag - Admittedly we don't know if any changes etc

even then the Starcaster prices were higher than other guitars - I thought they'd only gone 'silly' pricing in the last 10/15 years or so - As there was a time when no one wanted them
