What’s this in my dishwasher?

Had it for years and never noticed it before. It’s on the left inside panel of the lower part of the dishwasher and gets covered by the lower tray/basket thing when it’s slid into place. 

It has two settings, 1 & 2 - which one should it be on (I’ve been fiddling and can’t recall where it was when I found it) and what difference does it make?

No, the salt hopper is on the bottom of the machine, as is the filter.

I googled the maker and product number and got instructions for a washing machine!

Rinse aid is in the door, not that we ever use it.

It's a Fiddler Detector. It doesn't actually do anything, but when you move it, it sends a coded signal back to head office via the internet and invalidates the warranty.

Ha! Warranty ran out about 8 years ago so no danger there. Good thought though.

Got it - it's the water hardness setting. And your dishwasher is a Favorit .

I have no idea who made it, it was sold under the ikea brand but they don’t make appliances so it’s going to be rebadged. Thought it might be a whirlpool but it makes no difference to me.

Also, unless you live in an extremely hard water area, 2 is the wrong setting as well - that's the highest possible and is the default since it's the worst case.

If you're in Caldicot, south Wales, it's likely that you need it set to 1 and the electronic setting to 2.
