It’s a beautiful exercise in tension and resolution. Bach could only do it with a stringed instrument  because key and wind instruments were often untempered, and brass didn’t have all of the notes. It’s always irritated me that the guitar can’t get the timbre of those bass notes, where you can feel the horse hair rasping.
