1x12 combo cab build - what wood?

What's Hot
Hi,

I want to build a 1x12 combo, and have a preference for wood rather than Birch Ply.  Light weight is important to me, and thinking of some pine boards, or maybe sacrificing an old solid wood dining table.

I'd be interested to hear recommendations on what to use, and where to get it from.  Thanks.

Has anyone tried okoume? Does it make sense on all the cab? I’m about to make a baffle with some and to replace the frame supports.

  • I'm no expert but there's a tie between wood and resonance somewhere, in terms of how it will perform made out of different woods. I made a 2x10 out of Poplar ply and it sounds really good actually. All sealed. and it weighs next to nothing, easily carried with one hand.

    Hi mate

Im in the process of making one in walnut, but I reckon 15 or 18mm solid pine would do the job nicely.

Pine every day of the week!

Just use the ply for the baffle.

I just found some old furniture that I may be able to use, a pine wardrobe, and an antique cabinet in what looks like oak.  Just asking for permission to scavenge it.  I seem to recall that old oak is very hard, so maybe that's not a great choice, but it'll just be burnt, so a waste if not recycled.

  • Oak will be heavy. But if it's free... only gonna cost some time. Make 2 and see which you prefer
