    Scraping is the best way to get the old finish off.

    For sanding I like 3M gold "Sandblaster" range. 320 grit

    The risk with sand paper is that, once it has removed an area of varnish, it removes the wood underneath faster than the varnish around it, producing flat patches. Using a scraper helps you avoid that.

    A Stanley knife blade is an easily available option, but mind you don’t cut yourself. Cabinet scrapers are larger, easier to hold, and scrape better.
