A mate gave me a piece of walnut (with some nice flame in it) and asked me to knock up a lap steel for him. He’s had Guyatone and Harley Benton Lap steels before which doesn’t really set the bar high but recently obtained a Duessenberg which is a different kettle of ballparks.
Decided s shortish scale (22 1/2 inch) would complement the longer scale of the Doozy.
With the addition of some ash from stock and parts from the vast pile I came up with this.
I really enjoyed this build - designing it as I went along - but this did result in a slightly dodgy headstock geometry.
I’m delivering it (in a socially distanced manner) this afternoon, so we’ll see what he thinks - I’ve already got about 5 more designs in mind (properly planned this time) and am starting the next one tomorrow - this is turning into an obsession, which is surprising because I really can’t play these little buggers at all!

Edit...found the fretboard!...
Yup, that fretboard came from eBay - I’ll try to make the next one myself!
Needs 3 on a plate tuners and I THINK its just the friction of the side of the route for the plate that holds them in place, so I can feel a bit of modding coming on. Ill see when it arrives. Nice tidy solution though, if a bit pricey once Ive bought tuners too....
Instant base!, however cutting it for pickup and tuner plate will be fun! Its 3.5mm thick!......Holes at the corners and an angle grinder...with discs for aluminium.........probably......
Interesting cutting you’ve got coming up
