Tuned down to E flat on the HD28 a couple weeks ago, I love how the tone and feel have changed. My HD28 is one of the newer Reimagined ones with the forward shifted scalloped tracking and something the top E & B can sound a bit plinky and thin, especially capo'd.

Tuning down makes it easier to play and it sounds darker and more classic somehow.

I like it.

I rarely tune mine to standard. It sounds best in D standard or open G

I've got exactly the same guitar. What strings are on yours ?  It took me quite a time going through different strings finding which suited my guitar and my ears. I settled on Curt Mangans PB 13's. The guitar is in standard tuning, and with a Capo the E and B sounds lovely and rich.

I was intrigued to think you might have tuned it all the way down to almost an octave below standard

I went through a range of strings as long as my patience and wallet could stand and settled on Martin Lifespan 2.0 .013s, I'll get a pack of the Curt Mangans next time I place an order and give 'em a spin.
