Rode M5 microphone distortion

I've been using a pair of rode m5 condenser mics and have noticed that one has developed some faint distortion, almost as if it is clipping. The other one is fine through the same system. I used it last week = fine, it has stayed plugged into the same stand and lead untouched, today there is this issue which is strange. Could the mic be damaged?

No I'd actually gaffa taped them into position as the clips arent small enough.

They seem pretty well made and sturdy.    Sorry to ask the obvious but have you tried moving the cable from the good one into the distorting one just to double check the cable, preamp and settings are definitely ok?
