if you don't have any spare braided wire could you solder a "normal" cloth wire to extend the +ve and solder another cloth wire to the outer braid to use as your ground wire extension?

Yes, although the extension won't be shielded. It won't matter much if it's fairly short - or you can wind the ground wire around the centre wire if you've got enough length of it.
