When your illustrator has limited guitar knowledge.

What's Hot

As a designer/illustrator, if I don’t know what something looks like I get good reference material. I’m guessing that is not the case for all illustrators. I was looking up info on guitar building and came across this webpage with pictures that look terrible! The illustrator seems fairly competent technically, but his basic drawing is woeful!

A selection of bits, small tuners, super chunk pots, teeny frets, tiny strings, but what the frik is going on with those weird knobs!?!?!

Ahh, so it’s all for a miniature body …

Drilling the …. er …. World’s weirdest headstock or the thinnest guitar ever???

Because every guitar deserves a massive distorted neck plate to fasten the wonky neck on

Lets drill giant holes and poke wires through, that will look impressive

What ... are ... we … looking … at???? I guess it's the pancake guitar body but what the hell is going on with that giant switch placement???

Are the nut and Bridge massive or is it just a tiny pickup?

I just wanna know what’s going on with his fingers in the second pic. I’d have thought having arthritis would make fixing a guitar quite difficult.

It's all accurate and to scale.

Excellent work. Is it from a Cleartone Conversions guide?

Mind, I have a t-shirt with the slogan "Love one woman, many guitars"[1] (which, bizarrely, I'm wearing today) with little graphics of a woman, and a man. The man is holding/wearing multiple guitars.

The only problem is that one of the guitars is a bass. Oh yeah, and they're all left-handed (where you can tell based on body shape - or on back to front, obvs). Clearly some twat forgot that the printing process would reverse the image ...

It almost annoys me enough not to wear it.

The likeness of his builds are uncanny. It’s as if we’re looking at the real thing.

That switch in the last picture....   it's already on the stops - it can't move any further toward the neck and I very much doubt it can move much in the other direction before the arm hits the body.  That's terrible.

Somebody should make a guitar based on these pictures.

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.

I think it's quite fascinating.  He or she is obviously a perfectly competent illustrator, but they're drawing things they've only seen in pictures, with no idea at all of scale or purpose.

Does make you wonder why they didn't just use photos to illustrate the building/repair procedures.  Surely it would've been cheaper and easier?

Some of it looks disturbingly like the frst (and only) guitar I made myself. I'd left school, I was at a loose end, I got a plank of wood and bought some tuning pegs to make a weird noise machine . Then I got carried away and kept adding bits till it resembled a guitar. It got a chipboard body wrap to make it bigger'n fatter. Plywood fretboard, flat of course.  Luckily a guitar shop owner dissuaded me from making a pickup. It ended up sounding not too bad.
