Best way to remove gun stock oil

What's Hot
Just got hold of a very nice tele neck and the previous owner had applied gun stock oil, not particularly well. Need to remove it from maple shaft (rosewood board). Anyone know of a solvent that will do the job?

White spirit, acetone, etc?

Once the oil is off I’ll sand and nitro it.

These oils cross-link chemically so you can't dissolve them off as you would a cellulose finish.

Sanding it off is probably the best thing to do.

Fine sandpaper is the only sure fire way. You don't need to take much off.

    Screwfix paint stripper works...
Although for a neck Id use a Stanley blade as a scraper, then finish with sandpaper, it shouldn't take much effort as its a very thin finish

Thanks for the responses, all done now. Removed some of it with an old tin of wax remover, and the rest with 200 grit, finished off with 400. Now all it needs is a burst of nitro. Oh, and some other bits like a body, pickups, tuners, bridge..........

What a pity I didn’t see this thread earlier. Just use a Stanley knife - as advised by lam68 (Ceri Rendall).

    it works an absolute treat.
