Staining and oiling maple neck tips?

I'm just about to embark on a new partscaster and fancy oiling the maple neck (rosewood fingerboard) rather than nitro. I've never done it before and would appreciate any tips or 'how to' guides. I've got some tru oil kicking about somewhere that I've not used, but I'd also like to stain/darken the maple a bit before applying the tru oil.

What shall I use to stain the maple?
What tape should I use to tape off the rosewood fretboard?
Does tru oil darken the colour at all?

Thanks in advance.

Tru-oil will slightly yellow the neck, but not much.

I use any traditional wood stain/dye.  I normally do something dark, sand it back and do a more amber/yellow tint.  you can also mix the stains with the oil to tint that a bit more.  you cant do this with waterbased stains

Wilko's jacobean dark oak, sanded back and followed by antique pine gives a nice aged look.
