I have with me two Jack sockets - and I noticed a difference between them.

The one on the right is possibly better quality, but arguably the one on the left, since it’s smaller,  is less likely to short to the cavity screening...?

Yes, but it's much better to use the good jack and simply put a piece of insulating tape in the appropriate place to stop it shorting :).

Or put some heatshrink over the contact (excepting where it touches the tip of the plug of course)
