  • Love the fretmarkers!

Is that an output for each pickup?
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • Yup.

The neck pickup has Volume and Tone, and the tone control is a push/pull with a High Cut to completely remove the treble response from that massive 'bucker. The P pickup has a volume only, but that is a push/pull as well to join the 2 outputs together for using a single amp.

Amusingly the first time I'll be using it in anger will be with my daughter's school orchestra in a couple of weeks. Doing Beatles covers, the James Bond theme, Star Wars Imperial March etc!!

  • Is that a Billy Sheehan model?

0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • Yup!

I had originally refused to buy one as the RRP is stupid. Then Yamaha dropped the price. And then a lovely Bass Emporium did a special offer.

Then I promised the wife I'd redecorate the lounge. At an unspecified time.

  • Redecorate as in setting up the split rig o'doom so that everything falls of the walls and shelves?

Looks cool - I remember seeing those when they came out but I'd forgotten about them.

Did Billy Sheehan ever play a Rickenbacker? Just wondering since you can do an almost identical range of stuff on those! Stereo wiring with different amps and very different tones on the two pickups is fantastic, it can sound like double-tracking but played in real time and without any mistakes :). (Or with twice as many! :D)

  • Not that I know of.

He did it by accident - he loved the P bass but also loved the big EB-O sound. He says he didn't know how to wire up a switch so he just installed the Gibson pickup and another control and jack. His old amp had 2 inputs. Then he got another amp...

Then he found out Entwhistle was doing it too! Don't think JE was a Rick player either.

It's a common question he gets asked at clinics!

  • Now got it set up with D'Addarios and got the set up just right. Very low indeed and no buzz.

I might still swap the tuners for Hipshot ultra-lights. The balance is pretty damn good for this type of bass but losing 1/2 lb at the headstock end would be great.

This weekend I'll set up the Rig of Doom properly to run the pickups independently.

He was, but not much. He had a Rose-Morris import model 4001S (mono) in the very early days, and a 4005 (stereo) later on. Not his main basses though, so I doubt running two amps was because of the 4005.

    That is proper nice.

What does the neck pickup sound like?

  • That is proper nice.

What does the neck pickup sound like?

Deeper than Barry White. Especially with the tone turned down and the hi-cut engaged. Super deep, super low, and yet still articulate.
