What the fuck is wrong with this guitar mic?

Just played back the multitracks from last nights practice and the other guitarist sounds like this:

Now he does have quite an aggressive gainy tone, more so yesterday as he jsut got a helix and had very over cooked sounds but what the fuck is going on distortion wise in the top end of that? and where are the low mids?

It didnt sound like that in the room. 

Is it really just bad positioning or could it be clipping the mic?

Was off axis, right on the grill and was peaking at about -18db in the DAW so pretty confident it wasnt the pre's clipping.

Mic was a brand new SM57 btw

I dont remember it sounding like that in the room...I can prob find a bit of him playing through the drum overheads and see if it sounds messed up there

Can't listen to it at the mo but was it a real 57 ? there's so many fakes being sold now with shit capsules and no transformer

I think it came from Anderton's when he bought his helix and expression pedal but I can check
