    the red light is because its looking for an incoming signal and isnt getting one.  It works OK because when its off - there is no digital input that needs syncing.
    Digital IO on prosumer devices generally confuses people more than they assist.
    Higher channel count with good quality converters equals a lot more flexibility, but that equals higher cost.

    More than two digital devices and you are really into requiring wordclock or something like Dante and that is where people really start to get befuddled.
    This isn't the 80's and a couple of generations of conversion generally doesn't make any difference whatsoever.

    Ha, my thoughts exactly. Oh the joys of getting grudgingly-compatible pieces of equipment to sync to each other, and having to write down the order in which they were powered up to make it work.

    It was a real inspiration killer.
