Fender Eric Johnson Strats - What's all that about, then?

What's Hot
I've only really noticed these because there are now three for sale on the forum.

What's the deal with them, then? How come they're so pricey (new I mean, not the ones on here necessarily)? What makes them the ultimate strat I've heard forum people suggest they are?

  • Lots of nice upgrades on a 57 Strat.

    Quarter sawn necks,
12" flat radius and modern frets,
    tone control on bridge pickup,
    EJs own pickup set,
no string trees and staggered vintage tuners,
    Deep belly cut
No cover on springs etc etc

  • I'm about to make it 4.

Absolutely fantastic, just don't like the flat board on a strat. I should have known better....

  • Hmmm. Maybe need to play one to see...

I'm struggling with no cover on springs as being an "upgrade" ;) though I do prefer  'em that way myself...

  • PMd you VH. Apologies for the hijack. FWIW i've only played two Custom Shop Strats but the EJ i have is right up there for quality. Love the heft of the neck and the pickups are by far the best "stock" Fender pups i've come across

Not putting a spring cover on a strat is Fender innovation at its best.

Well no holes are drilled for it...

Plus and this is the clincher "there is no paint between the block and the trem base plate" & " No paint or finish inside the cavity!".

    Pure genius....

    or not.

I tried a maple board sunburst one and for me no other strat is even close.  I've tried tons and tons of custom shop pieces and they just didn't do it in comparison for me.

The EJ I tried as £999 brand new at the time.....

Eurgh, what a fool for not buying it.

  • They were exceptional value when new. Quite a few of my pupils got one when they were about £1100/1200, list on them now is a bit stupid. But the list on most fenders is stupid. Spot the company with a tricky financial predicament....

I don't even like Eric Johnson or his music for that matter, undoubtedly talented player, just not my bag at all.
