Strat shed its skin

I always hated the poly finish on my strat.

It's just a MIM 70s reissue in natural finish. The finish was starting to lift, so I broke out a hairdryer and a plastic bicycle tyre lever and went to work.

Now she's as nature intended.

    Looks like a yamaha pacifica
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

  • You're a brave man, but it looks like you've done a good job on that. I'll bet it will look lovely once it gets its new coat.

Did you measure the weight difference before & after ?
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • @CasperCaster thanks - haha yeah, it was lifting in a few places, then I noticed a crack in a patch on the back, then one thing led to another !! As you can see in the picture, the coating on the front nearly came off in one piece !! The horns were a bit trickier, but not much. The pointy end of the plastic tyre lever was just right for lifting it off once softened up with the hair dryer.

Good question - a few years ago on one of the US forums someone used the heat method to strip a Baja Tele. For a while those guitars were marketed as having a 'thin skin' poly finish. Anyway, the finish on that Baja weighed nearly half a pound. By comparison a good nitro finish may only be 1 or 2 ounces.

Cool. Any colour/tint at all? Pics when it’s finished :+1:

  • No colour, I love the natural finish, and it's a decent enough piece of wood. I will definitely post pics once it's done.

Here's a picture before the poly was stripped off. It's hard to make out, but the poly is bubbling around the socket and the trem. When it starts to lift, it takes on a milky-hue and makes a hollow noise when you tap it.

Other mods to this MIM 70s RI include a Tusq nut, Kluson tuners, fretboard re-profiled to 12" (from 7.5") and re-fretted with medium jumbos, Tonerider Surfari Alnico III pickups, Aluminium pickguard shield. Oh, and a bolt in the (unused) tremolo arm hole ;)
