This very interesting video popped up on my YouTube feed, by a guy called Dave Rat who , amongst other things , does the live mixing for RHCP.

He basically gets a mix, and then runs everything via a pre end post compressor control on the desk. Just balancing more busy songs with more compression, and less busy with less compression. Now to try this with my band using a behringer xr12 down the dog and duck!
