This is the 79th solo of the Month (SotM) Challenge.

The challenge is now open and ends at midnight 21st February 2022.

Discussion:
This backing track was kindly provided by @DrHungry ;;;;

You can download backing track from Soundcloud below:

https://soundcloud.com/thefretboard/sotm79-2022-02-dr-hungry-make-your-mark?si=18189058a8c44aa1a64cd38a976df0dc&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

Record your solo over the top of it and then submit it (ideally in mp3 format) to solos@theFB.co.uk
Also, feel free to comment on how you approached the solo, which will add a bit more interest and maybe we can learn something from each other.

Title: Make Your Mark

Tempo: 80 bpm

Chords:
Intro: |D / / Em  |

A section
(|Cma7 / / / |D / / /  |Cma7 / / / |D / / Em |) x2

B section
(|Em9 / / /  |D6sus2 / / / | Ama7 / / / |Gma7  / / /  |) x2
| Em9 / / /|

C part (same as A section)
(|Cma7 / / / |D / / /  |Cma7 / / / |D / / Em |) x2

There should be headroom to record your solo. Try to set a level without excessive master limiting, because we want to avoid loudness wars.

Voting will start soon after the submission deadline, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point
The order and scores of the top three entries will be announced soon after the voting ends.

No prizes. It's just for fun.

As people submit their entries, I'll post them below to hopefully promote some discussion on approaches used for the solo:

    Interesting!

    I think that 'B section' wants to be...

    ( | Em9 / / / | D6sus2 / / / | Ama7 / / / | Gma7 / / / | ) x 2
    | Em9 / / / |

    Kind of modern mixed with 80's.

      Well spotted.  I've correct it now.

  • When I receive a track, I always do a practice play along to set the level, so I'm sure there's enough headroom for the solos to be added.

    I got carried away in jamming along with this one and recorded a solo with about 20min of getting it from @DrHungry. I was going to replace it. But listening back I'll go with it.

    I'll just wait for a couple of entries first before I submit mine, because I don't want to jump the queue by starting before the official start :)

  • sent mine in , @DrHungry - great track that was a lot of fun, the B section has some tasty chords in it and the shuffle at the end - very epic :)

  • Nice, very suitable for some Vai-esque noodling over (from someone :lol: )

    I can't tell you how pleased I am that the backing has gone down well! Cheers guys. I'm really looking forward to hearing what everyone does with it - particularly since I am highly unlikely to be able to achieve any Vai-esque noodling myself!

  • This is so good - I'm still at the noodling through stage. the middle section is most tricky to think how to handle - god knows what will come out at the end of it!

    Nice one!
    I'm always looking for interesting USA Hamers for sale.

    At the moment I'm looking for:
    * Hamer Watson, SS2, Vintage S, T62.
    * Music Man Luke 1, Luke II

    Please drop me a message.

    As there are now two entries, I've added mine to the playlist. But, as I said earlier, I got carried away and jumped the gun, because it was actually recorded within about 20min of getting the backing track from @DrHungry ;;

    It was originally to test the levels, so it's basically a compliation of all of my cliches, which is what happens when I don't plan things out a bit. It was actually three takes stitched together because I didn't really look at the chords properly and was 'hunting around' in the middle bit, but hunting in the wrong forest during the first pass

    Bit of USA Tele Neck Pick Up fun. Slightly adjusted tone for the 3 sections.

  • Just sent one in. I started with vai noodling then the more I played it felt plini-esque so that is that vibe I seem to have landed on.

    I put in a couple of octaves and ended up doubling most bits because it was too stop start with the guitar coming in and out.

    This is the first thing I've ever put out publicly in about 35 years so hope it goes down well  :#

    Same guitar used on all parts - PRS SE Holcomb 6 tuned drop C which actually helped out as I could include a lot of open strings that were otherwise not possible in E standard.

    I used Neural DSP Petrucci plugin for everything. The lead tones were "Stereo Lead" factory preset and the warmer jazzy guitar preset was Tom Quayle's "Huge Stereo - Clean Amp".

    Guitar was straight into a DI box into Fireface UCX interface.
