What can be done to improve a guitar?

What does a sustainer do?  Other than the obvious...i.e. how do they work?

PS - Sustainer looks interesting.  Is it just one brand that make them?  Pricier than I expected.

The OP says he is a Full On Volume and Tone kind of guy.
Maybe he would not be a Full On Volume and Tone kind of guy if new wiring and pots gave him range and subtlety in both Volume and Tone?

Cool. Thanks for that. I've got a 4 conducter. JB I was thinking of putting in my LP. The 59 in the bridge is a bit brittle. If I'm reading that diagram right I can get a splittable effect without changing pots? Am I getting this right? I might do this later. I rarely roll tone off on the treble pickup so this would be useful.
