prefer the THR for overall sound quality and more "twiddly knobs"

I think I'd probably really like p90s. Never tried.

A dc special would be cool. Probably quite similar to my The Paul though.

that's my angle TBH  -  I "used" to want a LP Std gold top P90,  but now something a little "raw-er" perhaps  BUT I really dont like the specials/jnrs with the big pick-guards,   I saw a 2015 DC special,  which doesnt have it,  BUT its got the wanky gibson auto tuners and a zero nut thing....................

McCarty Soapbar - goldtop, dot inlays.
    Red ones are better.

Been there. I would recommend the following: take one dog-eared alnico magnetted P90, add one well weathered but solid Junior (pref. Gibson or near equivalent), thrash to your hearts content, and report back in about 6 months time.

The good thing about the Gibson zero fret nut is that you can easily replace it with a drop-in Tusq adjustable nut, which is perfect - being able to adjust nut height with an allen key allows perfect action setup...

If you are thinking cheap DC junior then might I interest you in a Vintage V130:

I've had lots of guitars with humbuckers, and lots with P-90s... I'd quite like one with a humbucker at the bridge and a P-90 at the neck, I haven't tried that combo.

I've been thinking of getting something like that SG Classic/Special and sticking a humbucker in the bridge.  That big scratchplate would hide any surgery.

As for "when am I ready?"  You'll never be ready.  It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it.  - pmbomb

I'd forgotten that one.  It does look good, but it's got the bloody slim taper neck and I'd have to bin the robot tuners....  I really wish I'd kept my Pete Townshend signature SG, it was a big mistake selling that one.
