I purchased this guitar in 1983, I knew nothing about guitars at the time but I was attracted to it because of the iconic Fender headstock.

Many, many years later I read an article about Fender acoustics and they had reintroduced an acoustic range of guitars in 1983 called the Californian series and the Catalina was one in that series. The early models were made in Japan. This model of mine was indeed made in Japan. It has a solid spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides. The neck is mahogany with a rosewood fingerboard.

I very rarely took the guitar out of the house until about 13 years ago when I started going to open mic nights. I had it refretted, a bone nut and bridge put on and a good tidying up by a luthier. I put a Fishman Rare earth pick up on it which failed me fairly quickly so instead of getting another pick up I decided to buy another guitar and another guitar and a bass guitar and an electric guitar. Subsequently this guitar has lay in its case for 10 years or more.
