Pat Metheny's Baritone Tuning

Hello everybody,

I saw Pat Metheny play live in London a few weeks ago with his trio. It was a fantastic show — they played for more than two hours with four encores!

Pat played a bunch of solo acoustic numbers on his baritone. The way he had it tuned was very interesting since the two middle strings were up an octave. I've done some research about it and people seem to call it a sort of "half-nashville" tuning, however, I have no idea if there is a proper name for it.

Also, I've listened to a bunch of Metheny's solo work and he seems to be using different variations of this tuning — always with the idea of having the two middle strings up an octave. I've made a video in which I mess around with it - let me know what you think:

Best,
