I saaaaay.  RIP.

* EDIT - I remember waiting for a haircut and reading an interview with LP in a lad's mag.  He was asked to explain the difference between a cad and a bounder.  He replied that a cad was a cunt, whereas a bounder was a fucking cunt.  I creased over.

Ding dong!

My heart dropped when I saw this news on the internet just now. It's been a long time coming I guess. For me he was one of those that got into the 'National treasure' category.

Leslie Phillips has been a big fave of mine since I was a kid. The Carry on films and also the Doctor films in particular. He was well known for his plummy accent but he was actually a Tottenham boy I believe!

I've seen his Carry on films in the past year or so, but I really feel the need to find all the Doctor films now!

This is how I remember him, 60s and 70s, and yes, Ding dong was definitely one of his catch phrases!:

    98 is a fair go.
Absolutely perfect for his early comedy roles as a rakish womanising type, but was a genuinely good actor too.
Fantastic with Peter O’Toole in 'Venus'.
    RIP

I genuinely didn't know whether to lol or wiz that - so thought I'd quote it to be on the safe side :)

    Great innings 98. RIP LP

I've said this many times before, but in this case I really did think the person in question had died years ago.

    Super chap.  RIP.

Yes @Philly_Q and @Kilgore - I've heard it said many times that he was a genuinely lovely chap.  BBC newsreader earlier gave her own little unscripted tribute saying she'd interviewed him and that he was warm, genuinely funny, made one feel important and interesting and was in every sense a real gent.

Makes such a change from some so-called celebs who are so far up their own backsides they don't know what time of day it is.

    Gawd bless 'im.

The archetype Lounge Lizard and therefore no wonder he was my Childhood hero.
I believe @Gassage referred to me in the Feedback section many years ago as a lovely chap but ' epitome of Lounge Lizard '
I know where the influence came from .

  • Quite an acclaimed Shakespearean actor I gather but I remember him from various roles as a cad/bounder/lothario. Just one of those people who made you smile when you saw him. RIP

"Ding Dong" came from one of the Carry On films in a hospital, he was Mr Bell, one of the patients.

Utterly superb when playing on character.

    Im gutted.. RIP
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.
