    Yeah that stings.

I remember years ago when my mate was weaning me onto jazz - "You'll find no finer sax solo" he stated as the intro to Night Dreamer played.

He was right of course. RIP

Oh man - feels like we are losing greatness and really not replacing it.  Off to listen to Speak no Evil and remember what cool sounds like

Man, I didn't realise he was 89, for so reason I thought he was much younger. He was an absolute legend. I loved his work with Weather Report. RIP Waynes and thanks for the great music.

Very sad.  Saw him play several times.  Always seemed such a nice bloke, as well as a genius level improviser and composer.

I only heard him play live once, in Manchester when they were doing the Phantom Navigator tour. Wayne, Marilyn Mazur, Don Alias, I dont remember the other players.....

I only saw him once, also. The duo tour he did with Herbie.

Another true gent. He was no slouch in Miles' band.

Sad times. Only saw him the once. Great player, really great composer. His tunes that have become standards are amongst my favourite jazz tunes to play.

My wife is a tribute player, in a way that I'm not, really, but I don't mind listening along. So far we've listened to Miles Smiles, Speak No Evil, Aja (just the track) and currently In a Silent Way. Amazing player.

Here's an open letter him and Herbie Hancock wrote to the next generation of artists in 2016

Yes, exactly. One of the great composers. Not even counting the stuff Miles put his name on.

Everyone with even a passing enjoyment of jazz should own this:

...and he just kept moving and improving as both a player and a writer. I bitterly regret not seeing the band he had with Brian Blade, Patitucci and Danilo Perez. That's some incredible music.

He had been ill for some time - he retired from live performances in 2016.
One of 'modern' jazz's absolute greatest composers.
Joe Zawinul always said Wayne was the best musician he ever played with.
I first saw Weather Report at Ronnie Scott's in the early 1970s. It was so unbelievable I went back the next night.
His best music is like a mystery; you can hear it, you can look at a chart of it, you can learn it, but - how did he think of that? Where did that come from?

    R.I.P.

I cannot imagine the experience of being in the physical presence of that band in a small venue.

Your closing paragraph...thank you. Crystallises something I couldn't find the words to express.

Fantastic sax player and he had such a great tone too, I’m not a great fan of the screechy, honking stuff but Wayne was sublime. I saw him with Weather Report in the early 70s, what a superb band they were, mostly down to Joe and Wayne. RIP.
