First time playing originals last Saturday

I've played possibly hundreds of cover gigs, but last Saturday in Nottingham (at the Tap 'n' Tumbler - which is an awesome place, BTW), the new originals band I've joined played our very first gig.

Oddly, I didn't feel as nervous as I do when playing covers!

Was a bit strange at first with the crowd not knowing the songs, but they were soon singing along and banging their heads - which was an awesome feeling to see and hear.

Does anyone else feel more 'calm' playing originals, or was it just a weird one-off?

It's this imo. I did it the other way around. I found cover gigs more difficult initially due to people's intimate knowledge of the material. Call it original and you can play any old bollocks (until you get a bit popular).
