RIP Peter Brötzmann

I first saw him at Tonic in New York in 2007 on the recommendation of someone I'd just met, and was completely blown away by the sheer energy. A true titan of the saxophone and of free-jazz.

Yup, sad to see him go. I saw him first in Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. I think I was 19 or 20 and reasonably new to playing sax. I was changed and damaged (in the best way) for good. He was a fantastic artist who never pampered to the masses or commercial success but always did what he wanted and followed who he was.

Saw him play as part of the Hairy Bones quartet back in '09. Absolutely ferocious player. Loved Last Exit stuff he did with Sonny Sharrock as well but really like the 'Lowlife' album he did with Bill Laswell.



According to the Guardian Bill Clinton was a fan.
