I've never played that Martin model.

But you *are* planning to try before you consider buying, aren't you? Cos that's what you need to do.

I had one of these. It wasn't particularly awesome. Very quiet.

Worth comparing with Yamaha FG range before you commit. FG's are all dreads and are significantly cheaper even new.

And better? You'd have to AB. The nearest I've had to D1 was a Martin 000X1. Good but not great. Gave it away to young neighbour eventually.

The FG830 on the other hand is absolutely the yummiest student dread I have ever owned. Also have FG5 which is class above.

I had a D1 - it was a really resonant guitar - and very loud to my ears. Definitely should’ve kept it….

I had a D1 many years ago, sadly I had to sell when things got tight after I got married.

It's a really nice guitar for the price point, has that typical Martin sound and it even smelled lovely.

If I had a criticism it would only be that I found it to be hard work for fingerpicking, it didn't respond as well to a light touch -  strummed and flat picked it was great.  But then it is a dread' so perhaps I was expecting too much.

Would I have another one?  Absolutely!

  • I had an OM1 for a couple of years. TBH I can’t remember why I sold it…probably needed the cash. I thought it was all-solid…perhaps there have been different versions of the 1 series?

from what I remember, it had kind of a woofy sound, quite thick and ‘dry’. Sorry for the abstract description. I liked it though - wish I could have a strum on it now!
