It's something to do with the big scratchplates, I think scratchplates are both ugly and cool. And I like the modular nature of scratchplates, being able to assemble everything away from the guitar then just attach it with a few screws and a couple of solder joints.
As for Tiger above I am a huge Garcia fan but that’s so much his guitar I couldn’t imagine owning or playing one. Prefer his earlier Strat tones in any case.
