Thought I would post a few photos of my new to me 2014 McIlroy A25 that I bought a few weeks or so ago. American black walnut b/s with a western red cedar top. It's in excellent condition and I don't think it's been played much. It's got a 648mm scale length and all my other guitars are 630mm but I seem to be getting used to it.

Here they are.....

Suffice to say I'm very pleased with it.

Phil

Ps here's a quick video I did with a bit of slow flatpicking for you to get an idea of how it sounds.

Just had a listen - as I suspected, a lovely tone and crystal clarity.
Misread post - thought it said arr Eric Sykes..... :o
    Nicely played too.

    Photos + video? Now that's a review.

How does it compare to your Brooks?

I always wanted to try a McIlroy. Great stuff!

A beautiful instrument I am sure. I can't play the video right now because Mrs Tannin is asleep (we are in a hotel in Sri Lanka on our way home to Oz now) but will when I can.

I had the pleasure of playing a McIlroy - indeed one in cedar and Black Walnut - for the first time a week or two back at Project Music. A beautiful instrument, very rich and open. The lovely Lowden I played alongside it in the same timbers was even richer and more open but  less versatile, not so comfortable with louder passages. My friend and I agreed that we would have been very happy to take either one home.

I'm sure it will bring you much pleasure Phil.

We share a passion for Brook and McIlroy guitars Phil. I'll look forward to hearing your next album with additions on the new A25.

By the way, I can't recommend Phil's CDs highly enough (available on band camp). The playing and the tunes are absolutely beautiful.

Thanks all for the nice comments. In comparison to my Brooks? Well my Brooks are all 630mm scale length and this is 648mm but I'm getting used to it. The neck is chunkier as well with a slight V shape which seems fine as well. It's louder than my Brooks due to its depth possibly but is probably the nearest sounding to my Lamorna (my favourite) which is English walnut albeit with an Adi top rather than cedar. The other 2 Brooks are rosewood and mahogany so I've got a nice mixture now. It's got a lovely sound. I'm quite taken with it.

I have an Avalon of similar construction and it is my favourite guitar ever. Not only is is a big sound but the variety of tone is far greater than I've ever experienced before. Mostly I'm a hack chord player with playing the single notes as the  tune as an option.

  • I hope it's not like it's golf namesake. A brilliant start but often fails to deliver at the crucial time! ;)

Lovely guitars. Sounds Great in Heald Green used to have a healthy stock of Mcilroys back when they where still in business and I enjoyed trying them out when I was in there.

I bought mine at Sounds Great many moons ago. A great music shop and a huge shame that it closed down.

Thanks for these latest comments guys. This guitar was originally sold from Sounds Great shop in 2014 so you may well have played it

Bought mine in 2005, so I think I might not have seen yours Phil unless it had been hanging around a while ;)

First time I ever came across Mcllroy's was at Heald Green, that must have been around 2004 when I lived up North. Always said I would have one someday and I am now on my 2nd one =)  lovely guitars.

Sounds Great was a good shop for the area. Much missed I expect. What McIlroy's have you owned?

I've put a new video of this guitar in the Plug My Stuff section to show how it sounds played fingerstyle.
