This is the 99th solo of the Month (SotM) Challenge.

The challenge is now open and ends at midnight 24th October 2023

Discussion:
Thanks to @digitalkettle for this backing track

You can download the backing track from Soundcloud below:

https://soundcloud.com/thefretboard/sotm99-digitalkettle-eikositriophobia?si=863ec432cd9b4ea787d906cbee4b9542&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

Title: Eikositriophobia   (who'll spot the reason for the title first?)

BPM: 105

Structure/Chords:

• ( | Eb  F  | Cm9   | ) x 3
• | Eb  F  | Cm9   | Cm9   | Cm9   | Cm9   |
• ( | Cm7   | Cm69   | ) x 6

Record your solo over the top of it and then submit it (ideally in mp3 format) to solos@theFB.co.uk
Also, feel free to comment on how you approached the solo, which will add a bit more interest and maybe we can learn something from each other.

There should be headroom to record your solo. Try to set a level without excessive master limiting, because we want to avoid loudness wars.

Voting will start soon after the submission deadline, with each voter selecting their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
First choice gets 5 points - Second choice gets 3 points - Third choice gets 1 point
The order and scores of the top three entries will be announced soon after the voting ends.

No prizes. It's just for fun.

As people submit their entries, I'll post them below to hopefully promote some discussion on approaches used for the solo:
It's not a competition.

Is this like an improvising competition or are they meant to be written?

    Whatever you like.

There's usually a certain amount of planning (drop-ins etc) with my entries and I suspect with a few other entries.

    It's not a competition.

I've not yet worked out the significance of the number 23.  But, I did look up a Cm69 and learnt a new chord :+1:

I "think" I used C Dorian but not 100% sure, would that be right? My theory is a bit flimsy :flushed:

    Cool cheers

I searched up mode and scale images looking for the patterns I played and Dorian looked closest.

The names aren't that important really imo. I would go as far to say that the names are the most complicated thing about them. I think people are put off because you sound like a science professor by just mentioning them

Yeah, @stratman3142 likes a fairly precise description for his opening post...then everyone else can zoom in/out at will from that point...it obviously was a slight chord change so I listed it...but I was totally just thinking "lots of Cm".

Moving back and forth between the 7th and 6th within the same minor chord is very common in Latin music.

  • Sent mine in. As @susbemol says, I certainly got a latin vibe to this, kind of Santana-Esque.

I was using Dorian and probably the natural minor too.

Anyway, the recording was a Strat with tone rolled off and on neck pick up for first two sections and switch to Bridge for final section. Mesa Amp modeller and all the usual effect trimmings  :)
