The bigger body with longer neck does throw off proportions a bit.

These are just cheap Chinese tuners, but they seem to work well enough for now.  They can always be swapped out later if they start to become unreliable.

Onto finishing, here it is at the back getting it's sealer coats

The neck has a really nice shimmer.  I think I'm going to leave it natural.  It's hard to capture in a pic but it almost looks like a lighter snakewood

I have some shell pink nitro for the back of the body.

I also got some cans of pink flake  for the top and headstock.   I didn't fancy putting that through the gun

I'm going to spray that over a shell pink base coat,  then tint it all for an aged appearance that will tone it down a bit.   Plates will be sprayed with a deep goldtop gold

I decided to get some colour on this today.

I started with shell pink all over, then added sparkle to the top.   I really didn't like this so stripped the top back and did a darker rouge colour prior to the flake.  Unfortunately I messed up the shell pink sides redoing the top.  But the top is looking fun and you get a nice idea how the two tone finish will look once I redo the back and sides.

Now it needs a lot of clear.

  • That really suits the whole style of the thing.  I think if it was mine I'd prefer green sparkle, but that red is cool.

It's not actually that red.  I think I subconsciously made it a sparkly burgundy mist.

The base coat was a mix of shell pink, torino red and tobacco brown.  Then topped with the pink flake

Whatever it is it looks good. I'm not much of a fan of really red guitars (Hank Marvin style) but I quite like whatever colour that is.

It's looking really good.  I know it's too late and Gretsch didn't;t have them in sparkle jets, but an f-holr in the top would look interesting.

Not the fake one like on the Country Gent though!

I think it may have worked if I'd considered it sooner.

It will look more (jumbo)jet like once I get the plates sorted

Working on the guard design.  this will be made in clear perspex and sprayed a nice vintage gold on the reverse.  The bird is a Gannet, which I think nicely ties this guitars larger size with the G logos on the parts

    Nice touch, the gannet.

just cutting templates, I will reposition the decal elements once its all made - I might change or skip the text altogether.  I also may reshape the bottom end of this a bit so it isn't so close to the bridge

I think I will reshape like this

Will you move the bird to avoid wing clippage?

    (move it...it's upsetting me!)

yes of course.... i will make separate decals or masks for that  and position it where it looks best on the underside of the clear guard prior to painting

all the plastics are now ready for decals/spraying

New guard design is a much better fit.  Whilst i'm enjoying the CAD elements i am not learning, there is no substitute for a physical mock-up

The Gannet looks fabulous, makes a welcome change from the usual dragons etc.

You've done a great job in making the decals.

It is looking great Wez.  I bet with the gold on the back it will really add to the look of the guitar.
