what's a good cheap guitar to pc laptop interface to stop latency with guitar rig 6 and amplitude 5?

i don't play much plugged in tbh but just have the above on my laptop (sold my amp earlier in the year) for playing plugged in.

i have a rocksmith guitar usb cable that i plug direct into the laptop. unfortunately i get the dreaded latency issue.

i have managed to adjust so the latency isn't very much but it is there.

just wondering if a guitar pc interface would solve it?

i only play through the laptop speakers (no external speakers).

which one might you recommend that isn't expensive if possible (usb connector)?

thanks :-)

  • About 8-9 years ago i used the same and when i bought the entry level focusrite there was a considerable improvement.   I guess there are other determinants of laytency eg PC speed.

I use a Behringer UM2 interface. Cheap and does the job. Sure there's better options but you won't get much better value.

The AI I use with my Vox Tonelab SE and LE is the M-Audio M Track Duo which works very well

I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.  I don't really need the dual input of the 2i2 and the cheaper "Solo" one would have done me fine, but I bought it through the classifieds here.  GuitarGuitar used to do a Focusrite "bundle" comprising the audio interface, microphone and headphones, or you could add monitor speakers instead, but it looks as though they have wound down the Focusrite stock mostly sell Presonus now.

Gear4Music do the bundles.  I don't know what the improvements were from their "3rd Generation" devices to the current "4th Generation", but their bundle of the former is £144 whereas the latter is £230:

There are cheaper options that are just as good, like Behringer mentioned above, but I wonder whether it's possible that you may already have a devices like a desktop mini amp or preamp pedal that can be used as an audio interface.  I've tried a few of those simple guitar cable to USB adapters that go straight into the computer but I have never been satisfied with the results.  A proper external standalone USB Audio Interface is much more versatile and you will get much better results.  You will probably be able to buy one quite cheap through the classifieds if you create a "WTB" (want to buy) thread.

do things the other way around and buy a small multieffects unit to handle signal processing, using the computer only to record (if you do that) and stream backing tracks and stuff you want to learn? This one from Boss has just come out https://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/257886/boss-ir-2/p1 and seems cheap and minimalist.

  • I have the previous version of the ESI UGM192. Works a treat, was about £30 used. The new model is USB-C:
