Acoustics for someone who knows nothing

I see a mint furch yellow gc for just over your top budget on gumtree(£1100)  it's in Birmingham which I'm guessing is a long drive but I think at that money it is well worth a day on the road.

  I also like the Taylor GS mini as it’s so easy to pick up.

If you find one you can’t put down, get a decent luthier to set the action with the change.. most acoustics come with quite a high action.

What a strange customer review of the FS. The customer didnt even play the FS and said so,but gave it a 3/5 anyway!

I know of a mint OM33SR for £1400  but no idea how close cos Ive no idea where they're driving from

There is no question the Yamaha LL/LS series are very good midrange guitars for the money, complete with preamps and lovely pearlescent binding.

But I think the Red Label series are a serious sattempt by Yamaha to take on the much higher priced USA made Martins and Gibson. Plus I think they are at least finished in Japan if that matters.

Some reviewers claim the Yamaha FG5 wipes the floor with a Martin D18. Based on my one I am not sure if that is true, the Yam holds it own in most respects but it’s for me somewhat boomy lower end sound does not match that D18 growl. OTMartin’s QC has appeared to be inconsistent compared with Yamaha, and in the UK a D18 costs nearly three times as much. 

So at around 1k and if the OP is ok with mahogany , no electronics, and plain looks the FG/S/3/5 might be the correct choice.. or as has been said a lower end Furch( who seem to have made this rough price their specialty)
