Ooh. That’s nice.

I’d been trying to play/copy a Kate Rusby tune and could work out what chord shapes she was using, then The Google suggested she uses Double Drop D tuning and voila, the shapes I was seeing sounded right. It’s lush.

Anyone use it much?
Red ones are better.

Used it for Eric Johnson's 'Song for George'...might see if I can pull it back into memory!

only ever capo'd "drop D"  - for Never going back
just because you don't, doesn't mean you can't

I’ll be the one to ask what double drop D is then!

    Both E strings??

Been playing about with it recently, as rustneversleeps states, a few Neil Young songs use it. Not a huge fan of his but a few songs are good.
'Find the Cost of Freedom' (CSNY) works really well in Double Drop D.

     :)

I think most right minded people would agree that Cinnamon Girl is the greatest of all the double drop D riffs.

30-odd years ago I used to use open tunings a lot, so much so that I had a couple of semi-permanently tuned to open E and open D. Admittedly this was largely for slide, but normal playing as well.

Fast forward to this century and I almost never use any open tuning. (The "almost" because I very occasionally use drop D for five minutes or so.) I don't play slide anymore, so it's just a matter of finding interesting new things to do. The way things stand, I keep finding interesting new things to do in standard tuning, so other tunings don't get a look in.

All of that said, I've never heard of double drop D and I'll have a tinker with it later on today. Thanks for the idea!

  • Strangely enough Colin Hay of Men at Work does a demo of Overkill and says its in Drop D,but he is actually describing double drop D as he says to tune both E strings to D rather than just one. Great song too.

^^Yes, Colin Hay's Overkill. Also watching YouTube old vids of Tim Hardin's 'If I were a carpenter ' and 'Red Balloon' seem to be Double Drop D.
Of course in Double Drop D you're only 1 string away from DADGAD tuning too......that can sound lush.
     =)

Here's one in double drop D by Eric Johnson, called 'Song for George'.
It's short but I don't have enough decades left to learn it myself!

  • I think you can tell the type of person in this thread by the fact nobody has linked the title to a quip about bra size yet.

I don’t think it’s that way around - not making the connection isn’t being a kind of person…

Big Open G and Open D fan here. I don't think I've actually used double drop D for anything but will give it a try

    I do use Open G with a low C on occasion too - that's good fun :)
